Design Technology provides the opportunity for children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and other’s needs. Making mistakes is a huge part of Design and Technology and is integral to learning and essential to learning.
At West End Primary School, we value Design Technology as an inspiring and rigorous and practical subject. We encourage the children to bring their ideas and designs to life using their ever-developing skills and problem solving.
Throughout the curriculum, we expose the children to the wider world, allowing them to see how products have been developed over time and the importance designers and inventors have on influencing new products in today’s society. We are working in partnership with Lancaster University on the process of design in the real world.

One project will be taught each term with a focus on the process as well as the end product. These projects will include one topic related to food and will ensure that the two strands Design and Making, and Food and Nutrition. Topics are cross-curricular and support a broad range of subject knowledge including mathematics, science, computing and art.
Within Design and Technology children will build on a range of practical and technical skills, testing their ideas and evaluating their own products and the work of others. Across all year groups children should be designing and making
Something for Somebody for Some Purpose.
